This Is Why Organic Cotton Knitwear is The All-Year-Round Choice

This Is Why Organic Cotton Knitwear is The All-Year-Round Choice

You might be thinking: knitwear, for the summer? Here at Amano Knitwear, we have designed the perfect organic cotton knitwear range that suits all seasons. Let’s explain why organic cotton knitwear is the all-year-round option that needs to be added to your wardrobe:

What Is Organic Cotton?

Firstly, let’s explain. Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilisers, or genetically modified seeds (GMOs). Instead, organic cotton relies on natural methods such as crop rotation, soil enrichment, and natural pest control to maintain healthy crop growth and to minimise environmental impact.

What is organic cotton made of?

First planted in the 1980s, organic cotton was an attempt to secure sustainable, biodynamic agriculture. Naturally cultivated cotton hasn’t been made with any synthetic or human-made technologies or pesticides.

According to Fairtrade, “organic cotton generated 45% less greenhouse gas emissions, at 862 kg carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) per hectare compared to 1,563 kg CO₂e per hectare for non-Fairtrade cotton grown with either organic or conventional methods.”

So, why is organic cotton sustainable?

Organic cotton is cultivated with a focus on sustainability - it is considered a more sustainable choice due to its reduced environmental impact compared to conventional cotton. To round it up:

  • Reduced pesticide and fertiliser use

  • Lower water consumption

  • Lower greenhouse gas emissions

  • Promotes biodiversity

  • Biodegradable and recyclable

  • Supports regenerative agriculture

What is a GoTS certification?

A good way to find out if your cotton pieces are organic is to see if they are Global Organic Textile Standard, GOTS-certified - this is a certification that proves that the cotton farming goes beyond just organic farming practices. It ensures that the entire textile supply chain for specific organic cotton knitwear meets strict ecological and social criteria.

The Seasonal Benefits of Organic Cotton

Organic cotton knitwear is the perfect choice for every season, thanks to its versatility and natural fibre composition. We’ve curated a quick stop-by checklist that informs you on how our knitwear can benefit you through each season.

Spring & Summer

  • Breathability: Organic cotton’s loose weave and knit allows for air circulation and prevents overheating, keeping you cool in the hotter months.

  • Moisture-wicking: Due to loose weave and natural fibres, organic cotton easily absorbs sweat, meaning that you are kept dry and comfortable all summer long.

  • Hypoallergenic: Organic cotton has been grown without toxic chemicals or human-made pesticides, knitwear reduces the risk of skin irritation and allergic reactions, which is especially important during warmer months when your skin is more sensitive. Opting for organic cotton knitwear is a great choice for those who are prone to sensitive skin.

 Autumn & Winter

  • Insulation: Due to its air pockets, which trap the air, the organic cotton yarn helps you to feel insulated against the cold. This insulation also means that organic cotton knitwear is a great layering piece for those extremely cold seasons.

  • Comfort: Its natural softness and comfort make it ideal for cosy winter clothing.

  • Durability: Organic cotton has not been grown with human-made pesticides or toxic chemicals, which weaken fibres, each piece of organic cotton knitwear is high-quality and made to last.
