Why Choose Forever Amano?

We're inspired by the past but looking to the future.

Since 1988, we’ve been working closely with incredible artisans in Ecuador to provide ethically sourced, handcrafted, and fair-trade sweaters and knitwear. Fun Fact: You will find a picture and name of the knitter of your amano on the swing label.

‘A mano’ means ‘by hand’ in Spanish.

Over the last 40 years, we’ve worked closely with knitters from Carchi to create collections that celebrate color lovers and free spirits who want to invest in clothing with a human connection.

FAQ

What makes Amano knitwear unique?

Amano knitwear is ethically handmade and fair-trade, crafted by artisans in South America, primarily Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru, since 1988. Each piece is hand-knit, from high-quality alpaca or wool, and designed with vibrant colors and individual character. Our garment tags even include the name of the knitter who made your piece, emphasizing the human connection in our fashion.

How long does it take to knit a sweater?

When it comes to answering this question, it is hard to say. There are multiple factors, such as the complexity of the design, whether it is the first time our knitters have worked with the pattern, and how we are measuring the time taken. However, along with the better quality yarn, the skill levels have increased exponentially. We would say that a star cardigan, for example, will take around two days' work with a 7-hour day.

How to store hand-knit sweaters?

The best way to store hand-knit sweaters is to store them flat, as this prevents stretching and distortion. You could also store your knitted sweater in breathable containers, avoiding airtight plastic, and ensure that you are protecting your sweaters from heat and sunlight.

Can you wash a hand-knitted sweater?

Yes, you can. However, we would advise washing your hand-knitted sweaters as little as possible - not only is this positive for the environment, but it really isn't necessary with general wear.

When you are washing your sweaters, it's best to hand-wash; however, if you choose to machine wash, you should use a delicate cycle with a short duration and cold water. Avoid ringing or twisting the fabrics, and dry your sweater flat to prevent stretching.

How do I stop my knitwear from pilling?

To prevent pilling, we would recommend washing your sweaters inside out on a gentle cycle. You should avoid over-washing or tumble drying, as this will lead to further pilling. If your knitwear does show signs of pilling, using a fabric shaver or lint roller is the best way to remove excess fabric. Also when wearing a bag over your shoulder, or using a walking stick, anything that has a repetitive action will create rubbing and pilling.

How do I know what size to buy?

We have provided a sizing guide herefor you to check your measurements. If you are still unsure, please feel free to contact our friendly team.

What are your delivery options and timelines?

We dispatch from both the UK and Ecuador. Pocket!

I forgot to mention in my previous review, the pockets.
It has brilliantly sized pockets! Only other women will understand how important a good pocket is!

Beautiful!

I fell in love with this cardigan when I saw a lady wearing it while out one evening. When I got home I did a Google search for Strawberry cardigan and was excited when I found it on Amano's website. I very rarely treat myself, so while it is more than I would usually spend, I decided to buy it as a gift to myself and I'm so happy that I did. After ordering on Monday my cardigan arrived Tuesday of the following week. It was beautifully wrapped and had a little bio of the lady who had knitted it. It's lovely and thick but the wool is not itchy, which I was worried about. It is definitely my favourite item of clothing.

A piece that will last a lifetime and so fun! I’m a M-L in most things and the M fits really nicely.

Love it.

The cardigan is beautiful. Loose fitting so size S was fine for me and fortunately I like the looser look. Liked the inclusion of info about the person that knotted it.
However - delivery took ages and the parcel seemed to be stuck with Fedex at Stanstead, so arrived a week after the expected delivery time. Did not know it was arriving from source and not UK.
